VetOmics Podcast: Genomics Diagnostics and Precision Medicine in Veterinary Oncology
At VetOmics, we are committed to advancing cancer care for pets through data, education, and collaboration. We’re excited to launch the VetOmics Podcast: Genomic Diagnostics and Precision Medicine in Veterinary Oncology. In this series, we’ll be engaging with leading clinicians to explore the real-world application of genomic diagnostics and precision medicine in veterinary oncology, diving into the vision, approach, challenges, and opportunities that are advancing cancer care for pets with cancer.

Genomics Diagnostics and Precision Medicine in Practice: A Conversation with Dr. Brendan Boostrom
In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Brandon Boostrom, a board‑certified veterinary oncologist and an early adopter of genomic profiling in clinical practice. Dr. Boostrom shares his broad experience using genomics‑guided cancer care, not only to inform treatment decisions, but also to explore its growing potential in cancer predisposition and prevention. We discuss when it makes sense to act early rather than waiting for a “Hail Mary,” the appeal and practicality of oral targeted therapies, and how genomic insights can help clinicians start on the best possible footing.
Dr. Boostrom reflects on one of his most memorable success stories, Petey, highlighting the role of tumor mutational burden and immunotherapy, and emphasizes the value of having multiple and alternative treatment options available in the cancer journey.
We also dive into the critical need for collecting follow‑up data, along with practical tips on leveraging AI tools to make this feasible in busy clinical settings. We close with Dr. Boostrom’s wish list for what we can do together, and his practical advice for clinicians who are new to precision oncology, particularly how to frame complex, multi‑modality options in a way that is accessible and empowering for pet families.
Genomics Diagnostics and Precision Medicine in Practice: A Conversation with Dr. Aarti Sabhlok
Dr. Sabhlok has been an early and consistent adopter of genomic testing since the very first assays became available. In this episode of the VetOmics Podcast, she shared her overall experience with genomics-guided cancer management, memorable cases, insights on targeted small molecule inhibitors and immunotherapy, what she hopes to see as the field evolves, practical tips for colleagues who are new to the field, and even the cancer type she recommends as a starting point. Hope these conversations are thought-provoking and informative.
Genomics Diagnostics and Precision Medicine in Practice: A Conversation with Dr. Janet Carreras
In this episode of the VetOmics Podcast, we’re joined by Dr. Janet Carreras, a board-certified veterinary oncologist whose career embodies compassion and chemistry-major scientific rigor and curiosity. Dr. Carreras shares how genomics is reshaping her daily decision-making, why she now recommends genomic profiling for most of her new oncology patients, where targeted therapies are showing the greatest promise, and how education, access, and early testing can shift the entire cancer care journey. She also discusses memorable success stories, the evolving role of combination therapies, and the practical challenges oncologists navigate when integrating genomics-guided precision medicine into real-world practice.
Genomics Diagnostics and Precision Medicine in Practice: A Conversation with Dr. Daina Budreckis
It was a real pleasure speaking with Dr. Daina Budreckis, whose clinical insight and curiosity beautifully bridge science and practice. Dr. Budreckis shared her experience integrating tumor genomic profiling into everyday oncology practice, offering first-hand feedback and a strong desire for more data to guide clinical decisions. We discussed how real-world clinical data from everyday patients, combined with the right genomic insights, can help fill critical knowledge gaps, advance cancer care, and ultimately improve patient outcomes. We also explored the exciting emergence of Feline Comprehensive Genomic Profiling (CGP), which is beginning to open new doors for understanding and managing cancer in cats. Still in its early stages, this work holds both great promise and notable challenges. We hope these discussions help raise meaningful awareness and drive progress toward bringing the same level of precision medicine care seen in human oncology to our veterinary patients.
Genomics Diagnostics and Precision Medicine in Practice: Conversation with Dr. Ondrej Skor, ECVIM-CA (oncology), and Dr. Heike Aupperle-Lellbach, PD (pathology)
Join us for this information-packed 90 minutes interdisciplinary discussion among an oncologist, a pathologist and a genomic scientist. Dr. Skor and Dr. Aupperle-Lellbach, two highly respected veterinary clinicians from Europe with deep expertise and publication track records, share their insights on the role and practical applications of genomic testing in veterinary oncology. This conversation highlights how interdisciplinary collaboration can drive progress and innovation. We’re united by a common goal: to work together and deliver the best possible solutions for our pet patients.
Genomics Diagnostics and Precision Medicine in Practice: A Conversation with Dr. Barb Kitchell
It was a real pleasure speaking with Dr. Kitchell, one of the most thoughtful voices in veterinary oncology. We covered a lot of ground, and we are grateful for her generosity in sharing both her clinical experience and forward-looking vision for integrating genomic testing into cancer care for pets.
In addition, Dr. Wang also shared our approach to interpreting large numbers of variants from sequencing the whole exome region of the canine genome (over 20,000 genes) and identifying those that may act as drivers or offer potential clinical actionability.
Whether you’re new to genomics or already using it in practice, we think you’ll find valuable insights here. Tune in and let us know what resonate with you, or what doesn’t! We are here to listen and help.
Genomics Diagnostics and Precision Medicine in Practice: A Conversation with Dr. MJ Hamilton
In this episode of the VetOmics Podcast, Dr. MJ Hamilton shares his experience of applying tumor genomic profiling into everyday practice, current challenges and opportunities ahead for improving outcomes through personalized cancer management.
