5. Urine-based Slides

Category: Sample Requirements & Process
  1. Collect urine: 40–50 mL urine (catheterized or free-catch). Larger volumes improve yield if cellularity is low.
  2. Pellet cells: Centrifuge urine to collect a cell pellet. If the pellet is small or not visible, repeat centrifugation or collect additional urine.
  3. Resuspend: Mix the pellet thoroughly in a smaller volume of fluid.
  4. Prepare slides: Make 5–10 slides via smearing or cytospin, Slides should have high cellularity and a high percentage of neoplastic cell population, with substantial material, ideally covering >50% of the slide surface rather than a small smear.
  5. Cytology review: Perform in-house cytology or submit 1–2 slides for review to confirm adequacy.
  6. Labeling & forms: Label slides with the patient name and/or VetOmics ID and include the VetOmics confirmation page when shipping.
  7. Shipping: Ship slides in a slide box at ambient temperature.
